New Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Rozum
Getting to know VCS's new English teacher, Mr. Rozum, inside and outside the classroom.
By VCS Senior Aunna Arnoto
Not every teacher starts out dreaming of a career in education; some consider becoming sportswriters or football scouts, just like Mr. Rozum! Mr. Rozum joined the VCS staff this year as a high school English teacher. He is currently working in Mr. Madison's former office, which has piqued students' curiosity about him. He hopes that his students this year will teach him to be more patient and compassionate.
Mr. Rozum graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in 2010 with a degree in business and from Youngstown State University in 2019 with a degree in education. He has been teaching for the past 10 years, seven of which he spent overseas in countries such as China, Kuwait, and Vietnam. He came to VCS because he still has a strong passion for teaching and wanted to provide for his family as both a husband and a father.
Although Mr. Rozum only began working at VCS a few weeks ago, his favorite part of the job is already the students. He says that, so far, his experience with the students has been positive and that they show him respect and get their work done. Mr. Rozum also shared that he believes his greatest strength as a teacher is his ability to connect with his students and adapt to different situations, while his biggest weakness is his impatience.
Outside of teaching, Mr. Rozum has several hobbies and interests that he wants to share with VCS. His hobbies include judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also enjoys listening to instrumental music, although he described himself as an “old-school punk rocker” in the past. When it comes to movies, he enjoys suspenseful superhero films and the Jason Bourne series. He is also a passionate sports fan. His favorite college football team is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and his favorite NFL team is the Denver Broncos. Fittingly for an English teacher, books also came up in the discussion, with Mr. Rozum stating that The Stand by Stephen King is his favorite novel.
Although VCS might be a little different from the schools where Mr. Rozum taught in China, Kuwait, and Vietnam, we hope our staff and student body can make his time here just as memorable as his experiences teaching around the world.
