Teacher Spotlight: Destiny Spivey

This week's VCS News Teacher Spotlight is on Destiny Spivey. She is a God-fearing woman who helps with chapel, organizes REACH, and is always at the games supporting our students. She is constantly speaking life into her students and has been part of the Valley Christian community for several years.

1. What’s your favorite part of teaching?

“My favorite part of teaching is getting to know the students and getting to watch them grow.”

2. What’s something your students have taught you?

“Impact happens inside. We don’t always see it instantaneously or see it expressed outwardly, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. You don’t always know what students are going through or when the Lord is using you to impact their lives. The way we show up matters, and it does make an impact. Even on the days when it feels like the least is happening, the Lord can still use it to reach them.”

3. What’s the funniest thing a student has ever said to you?

“I don’t know—there are so many funny and outright wild things students have said. I guess I’ll share a joke since I LOVE a silly joke: ‘Why was the football field so cold? Because of all the fans in the stands!’”

4. What advice would you give to new teachers?

“1. Know and hold on to your ‘why.’2. Connect before you correct.3. You have to make sure you’re being poured into, too.”

5. What’s a hidden talent you have, and why don’t you show it?

“I like to sketch, and I write poetry. I think it’s more personal—something I do for and with God. I really don’t want anyone judging it.”

6. Why did you become a teacher?

“God showed me that this is what I was supposed to do, and then He opened the door for me to do it.”

7. What’s one lesson you’ll never forget?

“Call people up, not out. See who God has made them to be and call them to that. Go diamond hunting. Look for the good and beautiful things that God has placed in people and in situations.”

8. If you weren’t a teacher, what do you think you would be doing?

“Well, realistically, I’d probably be working at Window World selling windows.”

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?

“Constant, repetitive noises—pen clicking, tapping, leg shaking, and things like that.”

10. What’s one place you really want to visit?

“Israel, Switzerland, and Italy.”

11. Are you a morning person or a night owl?

“Night owl, for sure!”

12. What’s your favorite hobby outside of school?

“Pickleball!!!!”

13. What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn?

“Piano, which I am currently learning, and crocheting.”

14. What is your favorite season and why?

“Ooh, that’s tough! I love all of them. Fall is so beautiful, and it’s sweater weather. I love bonfires and s’mores, too. But winter is also beautiful with the snow, and it’s cozy with blankets, a fire, and cocoa. Plus, I LOOOOOOOVE Christmastime with the lights and all of that!”
