Getting to know Valley Christian’s new middle school math teacher

Writer: VCS Senior Na’Ariyah Graham

Valley Christian Schools is welcoming Mr. Hungerford as a teacher for students in grades 6–8. With a passion for helping students succeed academically and grow spiritually, Mr. Hungerford is excited to get to know his students and encourage their interest in math. I had the opportunity to ask him a few questions about his background, interests, goals, and experiences as a teacher.

What made you want to become a teacher?

“I became a teacher because I wanted to help others.”

What was your favorite subject in school?

“My favorite subjects in school were math and Spanish.”

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?“My favorite things to do outside of school are watching my favorite Cleveland sports teams and spending time with my family and my cat. I also enjoy walking around my neighborhood.”

What are some of your goals for the school year?“Some of my goals for this school year are to further my students’ interest in math and to get to know my students better.”

What is something interesting about you that most students don’t know?“Something students who are not in my math classes might not know about me is that I have an 18-year-old cat named Peanut. I also love Italian food.”

What’s your favorite part about being a teacher?“My favorite part about being a teacher is watching students achieve great success and grow spiritually from year to year.”

What’s one thing you hope your students will learn this year?“I hope my sixth- through eighth-grade students learn how to solve equations, from one-step equations to multi-step equations.”

What college did you attend?“I attended Youngstown State University.”

What inspired you to become a teacher?“Everyone in my family has a degree in education. My dad was a principal, my mom was a special education teacher, and my sister was a communications professor.”

How many schools have you taught at?“This is the third school where I have taught. I have taught sixth- through eighth-grade math in the past, and I will be teaching it again this year.”

What is your most memorable moment as a teacher?“One memorable moment I have from teaching is falling out of my chair in the middle of class.”

Mr. Hungerford brings experience, a strong family connection to education, and a desire to help students grow both academically and spiritually. Valley Christian is excited to have him as part of the school community, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on his students this year.
