Administration Spotlight: Mr. Jackson
By VCS Junior JaQualyn Wiggins
This week's Administration Spotlight is on Mr. Jackson the VCS Spiritual Life Director.
Q: Can you elaborate on the day-to-day responsibilities this job entails?
A: My day-to-day entails the following:
Making connections with students and staff throughout the day
Planning opportunities for spiritual edification within the student body ie, chapel services, service projects, professional development for teachers
Foster connections with our community churches to aid in recruiting students to VCS.
Q: What are your biggest professional goals for the next 5 years?
A: Help the Administration meet its requirements for professional learning. This is a broad statement, but it involves me being a champion voice for Valley Christian Schools. I want to see hundreds of lives, transformed by God because they went to Valley Christian Schools.
Q: What are some challenges you’ve come across that you successfully broke through?
A: This being my first year at VCS, it was easy for me to come up with a new perspective to apply in various areas. One challenge is getting to know people. Though I don’t have a history with everyone, I put my best foot forward to be present. I want to be a helpful resource for others.
Q: What initially drew you to your field, and how has that passion evolved over time?
A: I’ve been in ministry for over 30 years. I’ve been to a lot of places, and have served God in many capacities. God has given me a love for His people. I want to witness God’s transformation in the lives of those I serve.
Q: What’s a valuable lesson you’ve learned from a work experience, good or bad?
A: It’s important to be self-aware–understanding what drives you, as well as places for improvement. No one is perfect, and we always have areas that need improvement. I’ve also learned that not everyone has to like you, and I’m good with that. The important thing is to still treat others well.
Q: What’s a fun fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know?
A: I enjoy music. I’m an avid listener as well as a musician.
Q: What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family, and best friends. It doesn’t matter what we do. God has blessed me with amazing people in my life. An occasional nap is good, too.
Q: Tell us about a time you had to overcome a significant obstacle at work. How did you approach it?
A: This is my first time working in the education field. While a bit uncomfortable, my approach is to be present and available to help wherever I’m allowed. I don’t believe in being a spectator. If help is needed, I want to be one of the first to offer.
Q: How do you handle pressure or tight deadlines? Share your tips for staying calm and focused.
A: Communication is key, when approaching deadlines. I can’t say that I met them perfectly. In the times that I don’t, I find it important to keep teammates in the loop. It’s always better to ask for help as well. That piece of advice can move you further, than keeping problems to yourself. I’m part of a team at VCS. I’m not alone.
Q: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever collected?
A: As a drummer, I love collecting different types of drums coming from different countries. My dream is to travel the globe, and learn different playing techniques. So far, I’ve been to Kenya, London, Japan, and France. I’ve had the chance to learn in each place.
